Okkyung Lee

Okkyung Lee

With a solid classical training as a foundation, cellist Okkyung Lee incorporates noise, jazz and traditional influences from her native Korea in her compositions and improvisations. She has crafted a personal range of extended techniques as a solo artist and as a regular contributor to the international improvised music scene. Since moving to New York in 2000 she has collaborated with prominent artists such as Laurie Anderson, Carla Bozulich, John Butcher, Chris Corsano, Carlos Giffoni, Thurston Moore and John Zorn, to name a few. Her discography includes solo releases on Editions Mego, Tzadik and Ecstatic Peace! and collaborations with Christian Marclay, Evan Parker, Peter Evans, Mark Fell and many others. ‘Okkyung Lee distorts, disturbs and even deconstructs her instrument, to the point of rendering it unrecognisable. And the results are simply amazing’ (The Quietus). www.okkyunglee.info
