From 25 to 26 February 2016, Sonic Acts hosts a two-day workshop led by artist and researcher Susan Schuppli, consisting of a field trip to the Cabauw Observatory on the first day and a practice-based research workshop on the second. In her forthcoming book The Material Witness, Susan Schuppli coins the term ‘extreme image’. Schuppli uses this term to call for an understanding of anthropogenic matter not only as a reorganisation of the geologic strata, but also of the field of aesthetics. Global warming has produced a new optical regime; completely new cloud formations populate the sky, while light diffuses and reflects differently, both operating as aesthetic and quasi-photographic systems. For this very special workshop, the participants will visit the Cabauw Experimental Site for Atmospheric Research (Cesar), which was established in 2002. At present, it is a consortium of eight institutes and universities located in the Netherlands, making it the focal point of experimental atmospheric research in the Netherlands. The Cabauw site is a unique observational facility with a comprehensive set of remote sensing and in-situ equipment that is used to monitor the state of the atmosphere, its radiative properties and its interaction with the land surface. During this two-day workshop, participants will be introduced to some of Cesar’s methods and processes. This knowledge will then be unpacked the following day in a practice-oriented workshop, dealing with questions relating to how investigative tools that scientists have developed can be used to make the changes in our atmosphere legible or visible, and finally even re-narrate them?
