HC Gilje – rift
rift is flickering petrochemical microscope textures: deep-time crude oil is violently transformed into colourful plastic wrappers for consumer goods. When thrown away the wrappers add to the heap of plastic in the oceans and in the ground. Plastic has a much longer duration than the item it wrapped, the person who bought it or the company that made it. Yet rift is also celebrates motion, energy and colour, accompanied by Justin Bennett’s groovy soundtrack. It is HC Gilje's homage to the New Zealand artist and motion enthusiast Len Lye. Commissioned by Sonic Acts and Hilde Methi for Dark Ecology. HC Gilje (NO) is an artist who works with realtime environments, installations, live performance, set design and single channel video. He was a member of the video-impro trio 242.pilots, and was also the visual motor of dance company Kreutzerkompani. In 2006, Gilje initiated the research project Conversations with Spaces where he explores how audiovisual technology can be used to transform, create, expand, amplify and interpret physical spaces. HC Gilje works with real-time environments, installations, live performance, set design and single-channel video. www.hcgilje.com Premiere Sonic Acts Festival 23 February 2017 Paradiso, Amsterdam, NL www.sonicacts.com
