Karl Klomp – Sonic Acts Academy 2020 spatial media design

For Sonic Acts Academy 2020, Karl Klomp developed an extensive spatial media infrastructure for the festival's night programme at Paradiso. The work – an innovative spatial setup utilising various media – created an intense visual experience, complementing the presentations of performing artists and the progressive club environment. Klomp’s work explores themes of circuit bending, improvisation, glitching, and complex dynamics – fitting seamlessly with the themes of de-normalisation, empowerment, activism, re-imagination and speculative culture explored by the performing artists. The installation connects sound, light, visuals and space to create a heightened sensory experience; the essential visual and spatial components of the installation actively involve the audience with the performance and space. Whereas the visual experience is an often-overlooked element when considering the social impact of dance music and club spaces, in a subtle way, the installation assists in forming an environment in which the public feels included and aware of the potential of spatial, structural and social transformations.

Commissioned by Sonic Acts as part of Re-Imagine Europe Karl Klomp is a Dutch media artist and video designer. He studied Interactive Media and Environments at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen, Netherlands. He works for live events, theatre and opera. He is interested in reflections of analogue and digital technologies in light, sound and video. Failure, glitch or miscommunications in these technologies make his media designs human and unpredictable. www.karlklomp.nl
