Rana Hamadeh – Étude #1: On Recitation

Étude #1: On Recitation is a composition-in-progress with organ book, organ book machine, Disklavier, Sony cube monitor and horn speakers, and is a stepping stone towards a future compositional work by the artist. Following The Ten Murders of Josephine – Rana Hamadeh’s first iteration of her unfolding ‘operatic’ practice, which complicates the relations of documentality and ownership – Étude #1 zooms further in on the question of the ‘documental’. The starting point for the composition is based on segments from Qur’anic scripture. In the Arabic language, the word qur’ān can be translated as ‘recitation’ and ‘that which holds the potentiality of recitability’. The Qur'ān – a singling-out of all that can be potentially recitable and the totality of modes with which such a ‘potentiality’ shall be recited – inspires a score that posits itself as the index and the administrator of ‘all potential discourse’. Étude #1: On Recitation was presented at Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam, as part of Sonic Acts Festival 2019.

Rana Hamadeh is a visual and performance artist from Lebanon based in the Netherlands. Drawing on a curatorial approach within her artistic practice, she develops longstanding discursive projects that think through the linguistic, legal and performative infrastructures and technologies of justice. In 2011 she initiated her ongoing Alien Encounters Project, which has since been operating as an incubator for a growing series of cartographic/theatrical, sound and text-based works, examining corporate and state-sponsored forms of violence and their enabling legal apparatuses. Since 2017 Hamadeh has been developing an ‘operatic practice’, experimenting with writing and composing, and testing out models for collective thinking and study. Hamadeh is the recipient of the Dutch Prix de Rome, 2017. Her previous solo exhibitions include Kunsthalle Winterthur (2019), Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam, 2017), The Showroom (London, 2016), etc. www.ranahamadeh.com Presentations Sonic Acts Festival 2019 8 February 2019 – 3 March 2019 Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam www.sonicacts.com
