Joris Strijbos – IsoScope

Joris Strijbos’ IsoScope is a kinetic sound-and-light installation. It consists of multiple robotic wind objects that interact with each other and with the landscape to perform a generative composition manifesting itself through emergent behaviour. Strijbos wanted to create an outdoor man-made phenomenon – an abstract sound-and-light entity – which, like most natural phenomena, can only be experienced under specific weather conditions. The work can be seen as a proposition for a new kind of machinic and artificial life. Though Strijbos spent a lot of time on the technical and functional development of the work, IsoScope is foremost a sensorial experience in which the audience can wander through the rotating lights and a constantly changing sonic cloud.

Commissioned by Sonic Acts and Hilde Methi for Dark Ecology. Realised in collaboration with Jeroen Molenaar, electronics by Daan Johan and programming by Erfan Abdi. Thanks to the Technical Department of Sør-Varanger Municipality for providing work space. This commission is kindly supported by the Mondriaan Fund. Joris Strijbos (NL) is a Rotterdam-based artist whose work focuses on the synaesthetic relationship and interaction between moving image and sound. His work is inspired by the ongoing research in the fields of cybernetics, emergent systems, artificial life and the communication of networked groups. Recently he has been working on a series of kinetic audiovisual installations and new media performances that create multi-sensorial compositions. Strijbos studied ArtScience at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague where he earned his Bachelor’s degree. He received his Master’s at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. His work has been widely shown at festivals, galleries and museums such as Ars Electronica in Linz, Sonic Acts Festival in Amsterdam, DEAF Biennale Rotterdam, Woodstreet Galleries Pittsburgh, the WRO International Media Art Biennale in Wroclaw, and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. www.jorisstrijbos.nl Premiere Dark Ecology Journey 26 November 2015 Langora, Kirkenes, NO www.darkecology.net
